With Karim Benzema’s departure now confirmed – the Ballon d’Or winner is set to sign for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad on a lucrative three-year deal – Real Madrid’s search for a attacking frontman has begun.

Los Blancos are set to bring in Joselu from recently-relegated Espanyol as a backup option, but are most of all prioritising a move for Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane to replace Benzema, according to today’s L’Équipe, who confirm Marca’s initial reporting.

Both Carlo Ancelotti and the Real Madrid upper management are set on signing the England striker, with the Italian manager convinced that his profile is the closest to replicating Benzema’s role. Given the 29-year-old only has one year left on his contract, the Spaniards believe they have more of a chance at convincing Spurs chairman Daniel Levy of selling than in past transfer windows.

The departures of the France striker, as well as Eden Hazard, Marco Asensio and Mariano Díaz, will free up ample space on the wage bill, on top of the funds that were initially set aside for the signing of Kylian Mbappé.
