They'll remain very much in the title fight if they can beat Sociedad but will face a battle to finish in the top two let alone win the league if they lose.

Here's how Los Blancos could line up for the game.

GK: Thibaut Courtois - The Belgian has kept just one clean sheet in his last six matches but performed well against Atletico Madrid last time out.

RB: Nacho - Dani Carvajal has missed Real Madrid's last three matches through injury, and while he could return, Ancelotti probably won't take the risk given Nacho is a more than capable deputy.

CB: Eder Militao - Militao has been as good as expected at the back this season but, more surprisingly, has made an impact at the other end too, getting four goals.

CB: Antonio Rudiger - Rudiger has been ever-present for Real Madrid since joining from Chelsea in the summer.

LB: Eduardo Camavinga - There's something of a crisis at left-back with David Alaba and Ferland Mendy carrying injuries; it's possible that one of them returns, but if not, Ancelotti may be forced to play Camavinga there.

CM: Luka Modric - The Croatian has picked up two goals and five assists in 18 matches against Real Sociedad, being on the losing side just four times.

CM: Toni Kroos - It's not his usual role, but Kroos may be forced to play as his team's lone holding midfielder if Camavinga is indeed moved to defence.

CM: Dani Ceballos - The former Arsenal loanee has started just four times in La Liga this season but could be given the nod after coming off the bench to get an assist against Atleti in midweek.

RW: Fede Valverde - Valverde has been one of Ancelotti's most important players this season and can expect to start against Sociedad, especially with Rodrygo picking up a knock last time out.

ST: Karim Benzema - Benzema has started 2023 well, getting five goals in six matches.
