Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric says winning the Ballon d'Or was the best moment of his career.

Modric stunned football with the triumph - breaking the duopoly of Barcelona star Lionel Messi and Juventus ace Cristiano Ronaldo in the process.

"It was an incredible moment, the best of my career personally. The Ballon d'Or is the greatest individual achievement there is. And I was very happy that people recognised me as the best footballer of that year, because when you analyse the situation, both in the UEFA prize, in The Best, to vote are captains, players and coaches, as well as journalists, you feel very proud," he told Four Four Two.

Modric says former Real teammate Cristiano Ronaldo sent his congratulations.

"Yes, we were still in touch and when I won he wrote to me. We're still in touch today. When someone like him sends you a message to congratulate you, it means a lot, because he knows what it's like to win, he's done it so many times. Playing with Cristiano at Real Madrid was incredible and special. He is one of the best players in the history of football. He was so demanding... During the games he wanted everyone to give their best. He motivated us, he was a leader."
