Xabi Alonso’s development as one of the best up-and-coming coaches of the modern era has been nothing short of spectacular.

The former Real Madrid midfielder took the reigns of Bayer Leverkusen when the German team was battling relegation in October last season.

The 41-year-old pulled them from the bottom half and led them to a top-sixfinish last season. And now, as things stand, they are going toe to toe with record Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Since their first game of the new campaign, Leverkusen have scored at least three goals in seven of their eight games. The only time they failed to do so was against Bayern Munich in a 2-2 draw.

Judging by the look of things, it is only natural to think that the former Liverpool midfielder is now destined for greatness, and with the Real Madrid job expected to be vacant at the end of the season, he remains a firm contender.

Alonso is calm over his future

Carlo Ancelotti’s future at Real Madrid is unclear as his contract expires at the end of the season. The Italian tactician is increasingly likely to take up the Brazil national team job which means the Madrid management is forced to look for replacements.

While they do have Raul and Alvaro Arbeloa to look at, Alonso’s name has been glittering in the list mostly because of his recent work at Leverkusen.

However, as The Athletic reports, the 41-year-old has shown no signs of discontent this season at Bayer Leverkusen.

In fact, everything points to the fact that he is not going to make any decision in a hurry.

“I never mind rumours about our players or coaches. If they’re good and successful, others will take note. In April, there were plenty of stories that Alonso would leave this summer. Didn’t happen,” said Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes.

What about Bayer Leverkusen?

Leverkusen are quite practical about this entire situation. In fact, they are far from oblivious.

If the opportunity for the Real Madrid job arises for Alonso next season, and he determines that he is prepared to accept it, the Germans won’t stand in his way and will endeavour to facilitate a smooth transition with minimal disruption.

However, there remains a glimmer of optimism that this scenario won’t reach its conclusion by May.

Thus far, Bayer Leverkusen have not been given any indication that Alonso desires to depart, and based on their observations to date, he doesn’t appear to be in a rush to make any decisions as well.
