Real Madrid have lost coach Alberto Garrido, who joins Watford in the English Championship on a two-year deal. Garrido has fulfilled various roles at the cluib, but most recently was acting as assistant to Castilla coach Raul Gonzalez.
Garrido, 48, has worked at various stages of the academy over the past 19 years, with a one-year hiatus at Las Rozas. Working alongside Guti, Zinedine Zidane and now Raul, his tutelage has contributed to the development of Fran Garcia, Achraf Hakimi, Sergio Arribas and Fede Valverde. He will now become part of coaching staff in London.
“He’s a vastly experienced coach, who has worked with Zidane. He’s most recently been working with Raul at Real Madrid, as sort of coach mentor. We have a lot of Spanish speaking players and he brings that to our coaching staff,” Watford manager Tom Cleverley told the Watford Observer.
“He coaches a style of football and identity that I like, and most importantly he comes from an environment of winners, which as I keep saying is really important. He ticks a lot of boxes for me personally, as a mentor, and for the club as a whole.”
Garrido is also a fluent English speaker, but is taking his first role outside of Spain. Raul has confirmed that he will continue in charge of Castilla next season, despite being heavily linked with a move to Germany this summer. Raul is taking charge of his sixth season at the B side at Valdebebas.
