To most, that statistic will come as no surprise, particularly after Real announced their intention to lift the trophy with shirts that read ‘A por la 14‘ (all out for number 14) following their semi-final triumph over Manchester City last month.

With their 14th success now safely in the bag following Vinicius Jr’s second-half strike in a 1-0 victory at the Stade de France, Los Blancos can boast double the number of European Cups held by any other club in history. AC Milan rank as Real’s nearest pursuer, having collected seven trophies.

However, it’s only when you break down Real’s record in the Champions League era, that you realise how dominant the La Liga giants have been across the competition’s 30-year existence.

A table compiled by the folks over at Transfermarkt, which awards three points for a win and one for a draw (regardless of the stage of the competition) for each Champions League match competed in throughout history, shows Carlo Ancelotti’s side as the runaway leaders.

Their tally of 901 points from their 461 games played is more than double that of Liverpool, who can only lay claim to 417 points from 221 games.

Real also enjoy a commanding advantage over fierce rivals Barcelona, who sit in third place with an overall record of 639 points in 325 games.

In between the two Spanish powerhouses in second place are three-time Champions League holders, Bayern Munich.

The Bundesliga outfit may have a mightily impressive pedigree in the competition – 722 points from 366 fixtures – but they are still are massive 179 points behind Real.

History, then, leaves us in absolutely no doubt about Madrid’s superiority.

Looking ahead, though, much is made of the lofty expectations placed upon both Man City and Paris Saint-Germain to deliver the trophy to their fans in the near future.

Famously, neither have ever managed to lift club football’s most coveted trophy. City fail to make the top 20 of this list, while PSG sit 17th – more than 650 points (or 221 wins) beneath Real.
