Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy (27) has been called up by Didier Deschamps for the upcoming June international fixtures. Les Bleus will convene at Clairefontaine on June 9th, and the side will face Gibraltar on June 16th in Faro and host Greece three days later at the Stade de France. Mendy has not worn the blue jersey since September 25th, 2022 in a disappointing 2-0 defeat at the hands of Denmark in the UEFA Nations League. The 9-time France international did not make the cut for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, with Deschamps entrusting Lucas (27) and Théo Hernandez (25) to play as left-backs.

The Bayern Munich man is absent as he has only just resumed full training with the Bavarians last week after being sidelined for six months. Hernandez sustained a season-ending ACL tear during France’s World Cup opener against Australia. “Ferland was injured for the March fixtures“, Deschamps pointed out during his press conference. “He already came with us and he knows his position very well.” The coach has lauded Mendy’s versatility, as he is able to play as a right-back. The France manager acknowledged that the Real Madrid player may not be back to his best yet, “which takes nothing away from his core quality.

With Mendy and Théo Hernandez called up as left-backs, Eduardo Camavinga (20) has been named among the midfielders in Deschamps’ squad. “I have almost three options per position now“, smiles Deschamps. “Eduardo is very good when playing in the midfield, he was very good at left-back too.
