According to a report from Sergio Santos, Paris Saint-Germain had targeted a January move for Real Madrid star Marco Asensio. The Spaniard was identified as the ideal man to reinforce the ranks in the club’s attacking unit during the second half of the campaign.

However, the report adds that Real Madrid knocked back the attempts from PSG. They did not want to negotiate with the French giants over a move for Asensio, whose current contract at Santiago Bernabeu expires at the end of the season.

Real Madrid’s priority is to renew the contract of Asensio. They are figuring out ways to convince the Spaniard to prolong his stay at the club, especially after a series of impressive performances over the past few months.

Formerly of RCD Mallorca, Asensio was barely considered a key player before the start of the season as the player had struggled a lot due to injuries and lack of form.

But lately, the versatile winger has impressed onlookers with his performances from the bench. He has made a series of solid cameos and was even selected for the Spain team that travelled to Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Asensio’s performances have raised many eyebrows, with even Barcelona being linked with a move for the Spanish international. PSG, too, had probed about the possibility of signing the player on a free transfer next summer.

But it appears Real Madrid are determined to keep hold of the 27-year-old. Asensio, for his part, is open to continuing at Santiago Bernabeu, but he wants regular game-time and to become an important player for the club.

The Spaniard is not looking for a lucrative contract, but prominence in the first-team. But with Real Madrid already building a solid base in the attack with Vinicius, Karim Benzema and Rodrygo, it will be interesting to see whether or not they can promise him regular game-time and convince him to prolong his career at the club.
