Real Madrid are reportedly making significant progress in securing the signing of Gabriel Castrelo, an 18-year-old attacking midfielder currently with Atletico Madrid.

According to Jorge Picon, the highly-rated youngster appears set to leave his current club after deciding not to renew his contract. This decision was made alongside his representatives, and key figures at Atletico are already aware of the situation.

Faced with the likelihood of losing one of their emerging talents, Atletico made several attempts to retain Castrelo. They held multiple meetings with the player’s entourage, but an agreement was never reached.

The negotiations eventually hit a deadlock, despite support from the player’s agency.

However, differences regarding his future forced the agency to step back from discussions. As a result, Atletico reportedly left Castrelo out of the squad, although he continues training with the youth team.

Real Madrid have taken advantage

With talks between Castrelo and Atletico breaking down, other clubs began expressing interest in the young midfielder.

Real Madrid wasted no time in stepping up, recognising the opportunity to bolster their youth ranks.

Sources suggest that Castrelo’s move to Real Madrid is already being planned for the 2025/26 season, which would be his first as a senior player. This strategic decision is part of Real Madrid’s continued efforts to strengthen their reserve teams.

Interestingly, Real Madrid approached the Atletico Madrid youth setup to inform them of their interest in Castrelo. This respectful gesture demonstrated Real Madrid’s intention to maintain professionalism despite the fierce rivalry between the clubs.

Green light given

Once discussions were initiated, La Fabrica, Real Madrid’s youth development system, gave the green light to pursue the talented midfielder.

If the transfer is completed, it would be a significant win for Real Madrid, who continue to identify and attract promising young players.

Castrelo’s potential and creative flair could prove to be a valuable asset for their long-term project. For now, all eyes are on how the situation develops as Real Madrid edge closer to finalising this promising addition to their youth ranks.
