In a recent report, Defensa Central stated that Real Madrid have identified Borussia Monchengladbach keeper Yann Sommer as a target. It has been revealed that Los Blancos are eyeing a move to land the Switzerland international next year.

Sommer’s Impressive Form In German Football

Sommer has experienced a decent campaign with Monchengladbach as he has put in a run of solid displays in goal for the German club. The 33-year-old has conceded 20 goals and picked up five clean sheets in 17 matches for both his club and country this season across all competitions.

The Morges-born talent has performed well to average 1.3 clearances and 6.9 long balls per 90 minutes in Bundesliga. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball from the back, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 80.5% in the German first division (stats via whoscored).

Sommer is currently representing his nation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup which is being held in Qatar. His current contract at Monchengladbach is set to expire at the end of this campaign. Hence, it makes sense for Los Blancos to recruit him on a free transfer next summer as he would be an ideal backup to Thibaut Courtois at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Should Real Madrid Head Coach Carlo Ancelotti Snap Sommer Up Next Summer?

Sommer can be a safe pair of hands in between the sticks as he has got a wealth of experience at the highest level. He has decent reflexes under his belt and can make some important saves at the back.

The Swiss goalkeeping sensation is a good handler of the ball and can pass the ball well from the back. Hence, he would be a perfect choice to serve as Real Madrid’s second goalkeeping option in the coming seasons.

We can expect Sommer to enhance the quality and depth of Carlo Ancelotti’s match-day squad and help the Madrid giants challenge for even more top honours in the future. He will also be a good presence in Real Madrid‘s dressing room and is good enough to feature for the Spanish outfit in the domestic cup competitions which would allow Thibaut Courtois to get a rest more often.

At 33, Sommer has still got a few good years left in him to play at his best. Hence, Los Blancos should think about snapping him up at the end of this campaign when he is set to become a free agent.
