Real Madrid have announced the death of club legend Francisco ‘Paco’ Gento on Tuesday morning.
Gento was 88.
“Real Madrid would like to express its condolences, and its love and affection, to his wife Mari Luz, his sons Francisco and Julio, his granddaughters Aitana and Candela and all his relatives, colleagues and loved ones,” a statement read.
A winger during his illustrious playing career, Gento is the only player in history to win the European Cup (now the Champions League) six times.
Gento spent one season with Racing Santander at the start of his career before joining Madrid in 1953. He remained at the club until he retired in 1971, scoring 178 goals in 428 first team appearances.
As well as his six European Cups, Gento won 12 league titles (also a record) and two Copas del Rey.
He was capped 43 times by Spain.
