Real Madrid’s pursuit of Alvaro Carreras has gathered some pace after Benfica’s exit from the FIFA Club World Cup.

Now, after Real Madrid’s embarassing defeat to PSG in the semifinals, one would expect Los Blancos to go all out in their pursuit of the Benfica fullback.

A recent report from AS, to that end, has offered a fresh update on the future of the Benfica star, who is more than determined to return to Santiago Bernabeu.

A key point of conflict in the deal was agreeing a transfer value for the player, with Real Madrid not being too keen on meeting Benfica’s €50 million price tag.

Real Madrid hoping to complete deal this week

As per the report, however, Real Madrid are hopeful the deal can be completed this week as talks between them and Benfica continue in full swing.

The agreement with Carreras himself has been in place for over a month, with the player reportedly always dreaming of a return to the Spanish capital.

With Benfica now signing Real Madrid’s Rafa Obrador for €5 million, a deal which includes a buy-back and percentage of future sale, the Portuguese giants have secured their future at left-back and may now be more open to letting Carreras leave.

While the €50 million clause remains a sticking point, Real Madrid are pushing to bring it down closer to €40 million.

More than just a financial issue, paying the clause outright would prevent Madrid from using favorable tax rates and payment structures.

Nevertheless, Real Madrid remain optimistic that a deal can be struck sooner rather than later as the club desperately look to beef up their ranks in the fullback department.
