Real Madrid are interested in signing Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot as they look for a permanent successor to Dani Carvajal.
According to journalist Sergio Fernandez, the Spanish giants want to sign the Portuguese full-back if they miss out on Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Alexander-Arnold is in the final months of his contract, and Madrid are hoping to capitalise on that by signing him for free next summer.
The record-time Champions League winners are also envisaging Alexander-Arnold not signing for the club and have identified Dalot as an alternative target.
Contact was made with Dalot’s representative when Erik ten Hag was United’s manager, and they have been told that it will cost £42 million to sign him.
It is unclear whether the Portugal international will be keen on moving to the Spanish capital, particularly with the arrival of fellow countryman Ruben Amorim.
The 25-year-old has started two of the three games played under Amorim, who considers him a ‘very powerful‘ player for the club.
Dalot is one of the few United players who has played in every Premier League this season and has built on his impressive performance last term.
Despite United’s struggles last term, the Portuguese defender was head and shoulders above his teammates and was rightly voted as the Players’ Player of the Year.
It will be a herculean task for United to replace him, considering the current options in the market and the hyperinflation of players’ valuations.
Any attempt to lure him away from Old Trafford should be rejected.
