Alvaro Carreras’ arrival at Real Madrid was always expected to be coupled with the departure of an existing left-back, with Fran Garcia being the name more widely linked with a departure for a long time.

After all, the Spaniard was the lower-placed name on Carlo Ancelotti’s pecking order for most of last season with Ferland Mendy being placed ahead of him.

In the recent FIFA Club World Cup, however, Garcia grew in prominence under new manager Xabi Alonso and was one of Real Madrid’s best players in the tournament.

His displays impressed the new manager, and have seemingly done enough to place him as Carreras’ direct backup leaving Mendy as the least preferred option.

A problem for the club

As relayed in a recent report by AS, Real Madrid now see Mendy’s situation to be a serious problem for them for a multitude of reasons including his injury record, potential for departure and new pecking order.

For starters, Alonso has Carreras and Garcia in his plans and sees Mendy to be the one who can leave. However, there are no offers on the table for the Frenchman, nor does he intend to leave this summer.

Mendy’s current contract at the club runs for two more years but the lack of offers forces him to see out at least another year at the Spanish capital – one that will likely be with minimal minutes.

Adding to that poor situation is Mendy’s injury record which is nothing to boast about. He missed 142 days through injury last season and in the process, was unavailable for 23 games.

In fact, he has missed 567 days through injuries in his six seasons at the club with an average of over three months lost per season.

The third reason why Real Madrid see Mendy to be a liability is his style of play which no longer fits into the dynamic of the team.

Alonso, after all, requires his full-backs to be offensively adept but the Frenchman’s biggest strength has been his defensive stability over the years.

It remains to be seen if any offers pop up for the left-back in the coming days and whether a departure can be agreed upon. As it stands, however, Real Madrid look set to have three left-backs for next season.
