Real Madrid’s transition to the new generation in the attacking department has been relatively straightforward with the likes of Vinicius Jr., Rodrygo Goes and Kylian Mbappe all taking charge in their own ways.
The midfield, however, is one department the club have relatively struggled to pass the baton on in. Toni Kroos and Luka Modric, after all, were amongst the best in the world in their department and filling their shoes is easier said than done.
The transition from the gifted duo left Los Blancos in a situation with significantly less creativity in midfield and fewer incisive assists to get through opposition defences.
While the departure of Modric this summer was expected to be another crushing blow to the team’s ability to build up play through central channels, Arda Guler has well and truly stepped up as a massive creative presence for the men in white.

The young Turkish international has always been known for his playmaking but did not get a chance to build on his talent under Carlo Ancelotti. Now working under a manager who trusts his quality, in a midfield role, he is seeing more of the ball and developing rapidly.
Over Real Madrid’s last two games alone, Guler has created a staggering ten chances for Los Blancos of which eight came against Real Oviedo and two against Osasuna at home.
The number places him as Europe’s highest-ranked player on that front ahead of the likes of PSG’s Ousmane Dembele, Barcelona’s Raphinha and Sevilla’s Dodi Lukebakio.
Against Real Oviedo, he created double the number of chances that Federico Valverde created – who had the second-best output on the night. In the opener, he was tied with four other stars with two big chances created.
In a short time, the youngster has thus established himself as Alonso’s most powerful ‘line-breaker’, and it will be interesting to follow his development over the course of the season.
