Real Madrid eye Xabi Alonso as successor to Carlo Ancelotti | OneFootball

Real Madrid have identified Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso as a replacement for Carlo Ancelotti, reports BILD.

Ancelotti’s future at Santiago Bernabeu has been a subject of intense speculation, with reports continuing to link him with a move to the Brazil national team.

La Selecao have publicised their desire to bring in the Italian as the next permanent head coach.

Ancelotti, who won La Liga, Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup last season, has repeatedly insisted that he is committed to Los Merengues, with his current deal expiring in 2024.

However, he has come under fire for Madrid’s struggles in recent weeks, losing two of their last three games in La Liga, including the 2-0 defeat against Real Sociedad last night.

It has allowed arch-rivals Barcelona to gain a foothold in the title race. The La Liga trophy is well within their sights after establishing a 14-point lead at the top.

Madrid’s dip in form has raised concerns, with Copa del Rey final against Osasuna and the Champions League semi-final against Manchester City looming.

Ancelotti’s position is not in danger at the moment, but a trophyless season could impact his future.

Madrid have been tracking Alonso for a while and are impressed with his outstanding work at Leverkusen.

Alonso has led a massive turnaround at Bay Arena in October when Leverkusen, transforming them into one of the best teams in the Bundesliga.

Currently sixth in the Bundesliga table, Leverkusen are also in the semi-finals of the Europa League, where they are set to face AS Roma.

Castilla manager Raul is also a contender for the head coach role, but Madrid president Florentino Perez reportedly favours Alonso because of his impact at a higher level.

Julian Nagelsmann has also been on Madrid’s wishlist since he was sacked by Bayern Munich in March.
