It is the end of an era. Toni Kroos has officially announced his retirement from all forms of football at the end of the upcoming European Championships, and the streets in Madrid are in a state of shock.

The team’s upcoming clash against Real Betis will be the German international’s final La Liga game for Real Madrid, and the UCL final his last-ever appearance with the club’s crest.

Needless to say, the update is almost anti-climactic after reports of a renewal being close even weeks ago.

Real Madrid were informed yesterday

According to an update from The Athletic, Toni Kroos informed Carlo Ancelotti of his decision to retire from football yesterday, much before making the news public.

The officials at Real Madrid are devastated, as are the dressing room and the coaching staff. After all, not many expected it to be the end of the road for the club legend, especially given his high-quality performances throughout the season.

In 32 league appearances this season, the German star has scored one goal and provided eight assists for Los Blancos in La Liga. Further, he averages a stunning two key passes per game, created nine big chances and recovered close to five balls per game.

Perez speaks out

While the world still reels in shock over the legend’s abrupt decision to retire, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez spoke to the media and showered praise on the departing midfielder.

“Toni Kroos is one of the greatest players in the history of Real Madrid and that this club is and always will be his home.”

With the Champions League final being Kroos’ final dance with the Real Madrid crest, it is only fitting that the player leaves on a high with the club’s 15th UEFA Champions League title. There can be no more fitting tribute.
