Real Madrid secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, delivering a dominant performance that set them up well for the return fixture.
Centre-back Raul Asencio expressed his satisfaction with the result, emphasising how the team controlled the game from start to finish.
With the Champions League entering its decisive knockout phase, Asencio highlighted the importance of small details in determining the outcome of matches.
“We are entering a Champions League phase in which every game will be decided by small details.
“We knew Atletico’s quality, but we did a great job dominating from start to finish. We are left with the good individual performances we had,” he began saying.

Asencio stressed the significance of those goals, explaining how they provided the team with an extra boost of motivation to handle the various challenges presented during the game.
“Both goals – Rodrygo and Brahim – have helped the team. I’ll stick with that. They were goals at key moments and they gave us extra motivation to continue facing the different situations that arose in the game.
“They came at very opportune moments,” he added.
The defender also reflected on his own recent experiences on the pitch. He had been substituted at half-time in the match against Real Sociedad after facing hostile chants from the stands.
Additionally, he started on the bench against Real Betis last weekend. Despite these setbacks, Asencio insisted that he is feeling confident and comfortable in his role.
“I feel very, very good on a day-to-day basis. I feel very comfortable facing these types of matches.
“I am surrounded by good people, I thank my teammates and the coaching staff for everything they do for me. I hope it continues like this for a long time,” he admitted.
