In a major development, Real Madrid are seriously considering not playing the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona, reports El Chiringuito TV.
As per the report, Real Madrid’s legal department is currently drafting an official statement in which the club will demand a public apology from the referees involved in the Copa del Rey final.
This follows the explosive events surrounding the pre-match press conference and the emotional remarks made by referee Ricardo De Burgos Bengoetxea as well as VAR official Pablo Gonzalez Fuertes.
De Burgos Bengoetxea broke down in tears when asked about the situation and pressure created by RMTV videos criticising match officials.
Fuertes, on the other hand, stated that referees were reaching their limits over the matter and there could be a response in the coming days, raising concerns at Real Madrid about whether they can continue impartially in the finals.
Real Madrid have already staged a major protest by cancelling all official pre-match commitments – press conference, training session, and official photos – citing a lack of confidence in the referee’s neutrality and fitness to officiate the match.
Now, the possibility of Real Madrid returning home without playing is being discussed internally. With tensions at breaking point, the outcome of the final itself may now depend on how the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) responds in the coming hours.
