For a long while, Miguel Gutierrez had been strongly linked with a return to Real Madrid from Girona.

The former La Fabrica left-back has excelled since leaving Valdebebas a couple of years ago, and Los Blancos had a very affordable buyback clause for the Spaniard this summer.

Ultimately, though, Real Madrid opted not to re-sign Gutierrez and instead opted for another of their former academy talent, Alvaro Carreras, to reinforce the left-back position.

Real Madrid stand to gain as Napoli eye Gutierrez

However, Real Madrid now stand to pocket a significant windfall as Serie A giants Napoli eye a move for Gutierrez.

Indeed, according to AS, the reigning Italian champions have reignited their interest in the Girona defender having briefly decided to pursue other targets.

Under Antonio Conte, Napoli value defensive balance more than attacking flair from wide areas, and Gutierrez offers exactly that. He is solid defensively while also capable of contributing further up the pitch.

This could be good news for Real Madrid as under the terms of the original deal with Girona, they are entitled to 50% of the proceeds.

Possible €10 million in earnings

As per the report, Girona are demanding €25 million for Gutierrez, whose contract with the Catalan club runs until 2027.

There have been concerns that the left-back’s recent surgery to address an ankle issue might impact the transfer fee. But Girona are confident that it will not leave any lasting effects.

The La Liga club view him as one of their most valuable assets, are unwilling to lower their valuation. However, Napoli are prepared to offer only €18 million.

As per the report, a compromise in the region of €20 million could be reached, especially given Napoli’s increasing urgency and determination to close the deal. If so, Real Madrid would end up pocketing half the sum, i.e., €10 million.
