Real Madrid is set to embark on a high-profile pre-season tour of the United States, with a squad that includes a host of youth players ready to make an impression in professional football.

One of them is Joan Martinez. At just 16 years old, the prodigious defender from La Fabrica, is set to rub shoulders with the first-team stars as the club gear up for the US tour.

Joan Martinez in contention to play vs AC Milan

According to MARCA, Joao Martinez could potentially make his unofficial debut for the Real Madrid first-team in their first US tour friendly against AC Milan.

Real Madrid are slated to face the Rossoneri on July 31, at Soldier Field. With a host of first-team stars missing, this game will serve as an ideal opportunity for Carlo Ancelotti to try out some of his young players.

Joan Martinez, to that end, is one of the players in focus. The youngster has shown immense maturity and talent during his time in the youth competitions and is poised to make an impact in this pre-season.

Likened to Sergio Ramos

Martinez boasts an impressive physical stature, which is coupled with his technical ability and leadership qualities. These skillsets have led to comparisons to the legendary ex-Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos.

While the primary focus for Martinez will be to gain experience and learn from the first-team players, the opportunity to play against top-level opposition could accelerate his development.

Not to mention, Real Madrid are going through a bit of a crisis in the defensive unit, especially after Nacho’s departure and Leny Yoro’s move to Manchester United.

Although Jesus Vallejo has emerged as a candidate to become the club’s fourth centre-back next season, Joan Martinez is an excellent in-house alternative, should Los Blancos bet on the academy to provide them depth in the defensive unit next season.
