Real Madrid boast of one of Europe’s best defensive records this season despite facing a host of injury woes. Antonio Rudiger has been the leader in defence this term, but captain Nacho Fernandez has also been an integral part of the back line and its success.

The veteran was close to leaving the club last season keeping his reduced prominence in mind. In the end, he extended his stay by one year and was rewarded with what he desired most, but his future is once again in a cloud of doubt.

Departure on the cards

According to reports from AS, there are doubts over Nacho’s continuity at the club beyond this summer.

The player is aware that his importance this season is down to Eder Militao’s injury and he thus wonders if he will enjoy the same prominence next season.

As an extremely competitive player, Nacho does not wish to spend his final playing years on the sidelines.

Inter Milan were interested in signing him last summer, and it is clear that there will be a host of clubs eying him once more if he makes himself available.

The summer signing

Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba, and Nacho Fernandez are the core of Real Madrid’s backline. With all players on the wrong side of 30, however, there is an urgent need to rope in a younger name for the long haul.

The offices at Valdebebas hope to make the key recruitment in the summer of 2024. Leny Yoro, Antonio Silva, and Goncalo Inacio have all been linked with moves to Real Madrid and it is almost certain that one big signing will be made in defence.

Needless to say, the addition of a new direct competitor will also serve as a factor that influences Nacho’s decision.
