Real Madrid extended their lead at the top of La Liga on Saturday night thanks to an impressive 2-0 win over Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena.

Karim Benzema went off with a knee injury after just 16 minutes but his replacement changed the game. Luka Jovic, who had only scored two goals for the club before tonight’s game, was involved in both goals.

Vinicius scored his 10th league goal of the season just after half-time after some good build-up play and a layoff from Jovic. The Serbia international then doubled Madrid’s lead just minutes later. Toni Kroos’ corner was headed down by Casemiro and Jovic dived into the ground to direct a low header home from close range.

Real Sociedad failed to get back into the game, with Eder Militao particularly excellent in defence for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Madrid move onto 39 points, eight ahead of second-placed Sevilla with the result. Earlier on Saturday, rivals Barcelona lost 1-0 at home to Real Betis and Atlético Madrid lost 2-1 at home to Mallorca.

The main concern for Los Blancos is the injury to Benzema and it remains to be seen how long the club captain will be out of action for.
