Kick off was delayed by over half an hour as Liverpool fans struggled to get into the stadium.

Ugly scenes marred the opening exchanges with videos showing supporters being pepper-sprayed and empty seats littered across the Reds section of the stadium.

When the action eventually did get underway, it was Jürgen Klopp’s side who started the brighter as Jordan Henderson closed down Thibaut Courtois and almost blocked the Belgian goalkeeper’s pass into the back of the net.

But Courtois was the hero on 20 minutes as his outstretched right palm tipped a Sadio Mané effort on to the post when the Senegal international looked certain to score.

Los Blancos slowly got themselves back into the game though and thought they had scored right on the stroke of half time.

Karim Benzema pounced on a defensive mistake but the Frenchman’s close range finish was eventually deemed to be offside after an extended VAR check.

Into the second half and Liverpool almost got their noses in front as Luis Díaz seemed to latch on to a perfect Trent Alexander-Arnold cross.

Dani Carvajal though, was there just in time and headed clear with the Colombia international just inches away from an opener.

It was the Spanish side who broke the deadlock though, right on the hour mark as Vinicius Jnr ghosted in at the far post and bundled in a Fede Valverde cross.

It was Real’s first shot on target in the match but they didn’t care as Liverpool now went all out to get the equaliser.

The match got stretched in the final 15 minutes as Jürgen Klopp’s side tried everything to get on the scoresheet.

But they couldn’t find their shooting boots as Real Madrid held out for yet more European glory.
