On Tuesday evening, Chelsea were eliminated from the 2021/22 Champions League in dramatic fashion.
The Blues went into the second leg of their quarter-final tie against Real Madrid 3-1 down thanks to Karim Benzema‘s sublime hat-trick at Stamford Bridge.
Thomas Tuchel’s side had it all to do in the Santiago Bernabeu and no one thought they’d even get close to progressing.
But in the 75th-minute of proceedings, Chelsea were actually ahead in the tie.
Goals from Mason Mount, Antonio Rudiger and Timo Werner had the Blues 3-0 up on the night and 4-3 up on aggregate.
Real Madrid weren’t behind in the tie for long, though. Five minutes after Werner’s brilliant solo effort, the hosts got on the scoresheet through substitute Rodrygo Goes.
That took the game to extra-time, where Benzema struck the decisive blow to send the 13-time European champions to yet another semi-final.
To say it was a Champions League epic would be something of an understatement and it’s a shame one of the two sides had to be eliminated.
The game was played in a very sporting nature for the most part as well, although Toni Kroos couldn’t resist a little bit of pettiness after the full-time whistle had been blown.
New footage has emerged that appears to show the German midfielder mocking Mount by mimicking his pose.
Take a look for yourself…
Now you’re probably thinking; why would Kroos single out Mount?
Well, there’s a bit of history between them. Last season when Real Madrid and Chelsea met in the Champions League semi-finals, the pair got caught up in a war of words.
Prior to the second leg at Stamford Bridge, Kroos played down Chelsea’s threat by saying: “In my 15 years playing football, I never lost sleep. They showed in Madrid that they play as a team. They have a German coach so that doesn’t surprise me. They defend well and have pace up front, those are their strengths.”
So, when Chelsea emerged victorious 2-0, Mount – who was one of the goalscorers – decided to fire back at Kroos.
He said: “I saw one of their players say before that he doesn’t lose sleep over individuals.
“But as a team, they need to lose sleep over us as a team. We give so much, we defend for our lives.”
That wasn’t the end of it. The day after Mount’s interview, Kroos tweeted: “Still sleeping ok. But well done yesterday. congrats. Good luck in your first CL final.”
It’s very likely Kroos was just getting some form of revenge on Tuesday evening…
