Barcelona were simply too good for Real Madrid in the final of the Supercopa de Espana.
Xavi Hernandez’s side went into the match at the King Fahd International Stadium as slight underdogs, despite the fact they currently sit top of the La Liga table.
Real Madrid’s record in finals is quite frightening, while they are the champions of both Spain and Europe.
But Carlo Ancelotti’s men just couldn’t live with Barcelona in last Sunday’s El Clasico.
The Catalan outfit won by a scoreline of 3-1, with Gavi, Robert Lewandowski and Pedri the scorers on the night.
Karim Benzema‘s 93d minute strike was nothing more than a consolation for Los Blancos.
It was a vintage Barcelona display out in Saudi Arabia, one that bore some resemblance to those witnessed in the iconic Pep Guardiola era.
Barcelona’s attacking play was quick, slick and – above all – efficient, with Gavi right at the heart of it all.
The teenage sensation opened the scoring, before contributing the assists for Lewandowski and Pedri’s goals.
Not bad, eh? As well as striking some of the decisive blows, Gavi and Pedri were involved in a passage of play that has gone viral on social media.
In the 76th minute of proceedings, when Barcelona were 3-0 up and cruising, the playing style known as ‘tiki-taka’ was on show for the whole world to see.
The Blaugrana toyed with their fiercest rivals with around 40 seconds, before veteran midfielder Sergio Busquets was upended by Rodrygo Goes near the halfway line.
If you’re a fan of Barcelona, the footage below really is a treat for the eyes…
Did someone say ‘the beautiful game’?
Here’s how some fans have reacted to the marvellous footballing sequence above…
“This squad has received a lot of unfair criticism, and today many players have set themselves free,” Xavi said after the latest edition of El Clasico. “They will work more calmly.
“I’ve been here for so many years and I know how much players suffer when things don’t go well. Today is the start of a new positive dynamic.”
Xavi will now be targeting more silverware in 2022/23.
As we previously mentioned, Barcelona are three points clear of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, while they’re still in contention for the Copa del Rey and UEFA Europa League.
