The fourth, and possibly the last Madrid derby of the season went underway at the Santiago Bernabeu as Atletico Madrid were hoping to a domestic treble over Real Madrid this season, having registered one win each in the Copa del Rey and La Liga.
Madrid had quite a few players out with injury for this game, including Antonio Rudiger, who was replaced by Daniel Carvajal in central defence. Aurelien Tchouameni was suspended, which paved the way for Eduardo Camavinga to start.
If that was not enough, Vinicius Jr picked up a back injury while warming up, and had to shift to the bench, with Brahim Diaz replacing him.
That worked out well enough for Carlo Ancelotti, though, as Diaz opened the scoring, albeit after some lucky deflections.
Madrid did put in an excellent shift today, and played arguably one of their best games, at least in possession, in the league. Unfortunately, Marcos Llorente’s header cancelled out their early goal as Atletico took home a point.
Made some solid saves to keep Real Madrid in the game, and was quick to judge and collect crosses whenever they were flung near him.
A brilliant performance from the Spaniard running up and down the right flank. Did very well to link up with Diaz and Valverde, which essentially created the first goal. Could not do much about the Llorente goal.
Playing as a makeshift centre-back, Carvajal put in quite the shift clearing chances and intercepting most of Atletico’s half-chances. Har done by Llorente’s goal.
Unlike his partner, Nacho was caught out a couple of times when Atletico countered, and was lucky that Morata did not find the net in the first half. Could be blamed for the equaliser, though.
A basic run-of-the-mill performance from Mendy, who did a good job defensively to cover against Marcos Llorente, but gave away the ball that turned into a superb chance for Atleti. Added little to nothing in attack, though, which meant Madrid were constantly only creating from the right.
All-action as ever, Valverde was at the heart of everything Madrid tonight. Helped create Diaz’s goal, and was also a brick wall defensively when competing in duels.
Camavinga’s dynamism helped Madrid run the show in the final third as he shuffled with Kroos. Completed 100% of his first-half passes, and was much of the reason why the hosts remained unscathed.
The beating heart of Madrid’s midfield yet again, Kroos was unplayable in possession, finding new ways out of pressure with his passes. A bit here and there defensively, though, but that is nothing new.
Really put his all today, racing up and down the pitch to collect the ball and start counters. Was unlucky at some points with some sketchy decisions in the box, but another impressive game for the €100 million man.
Inarguably the most lively player in the game, Diaz ran the attack, collecting passes from midfield and driving at the Atletico defence. His work ethic was rewarded, too, as the ball found a way through to him inside the box as he converted with ease.
The Spaniard then came close to scoring in the second period, too, megging Hermoso before sending his shot just wide. To think he was not even going to start initially.
Atletico did well to negate most of Rodrygo’s threat today, but the Brazilian was still very active in the final third, combining with Diaz and Bellingham with one-twos and flicks and skills. Put in quite a defensive shift, too.
SUBSTITUTES
Tremendous back-to-goal play from Joselu tonight, who acted as an anchor in attack, linking up brilliantly with the midfield and creating chances. Came close to scoring a couple of times, too.
A nice little cameo from the veteran midfielder, as he evaded pressure and retained possession as Atletico were chasing the game.
