Catalan-based journalist Pepe Elías reports that Real Betis vice president of football Lorenzo Serra Ferrer is in Mexico to finalise the capture of 18-year-old Club América starlet Diego Lainez.

Lainez had an incredible 2018 Apertura campaign, scoring five goals in 15 matches while leading América to the Liga MX title with his dazzling skill down the wings.

Lainez earned his first two caps for Mexico in 2018 thanks to a number of eye-opening displays where he showcased his dribbling, speed, and technical ability.

Just days ago, it appeared Lainez was set to side with Dutch side Ajax, however, talks between the two sides have stalled.

Though América would prefer to have Lainez available for the 2019 Clausura campaign, Betis are adamant that they want to sign him immediately.

Lainez has also expressed desire to begin his European career immediately, and Betis could provide him with the unique opportunity to play immediately for a top La Liga side.

Fellow Mexican Andrés Guardado is a key member of the Betis squad and was captain of Mexico at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

However, there are rumors that state Guardado could be sent to América this summer as part of the deal.

Roma, Olympique de Lyon, and RB Leipzig are also said to still be in the running for Lainez.
