Rotherham United are in talks with West Ham over a potential deal for midfielder Conor Coventry.

That is according to a report from Football Insider this morning, which claims that the Millers are negotiating a deal to bring the 22-year-old to the New York Stadium on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

As per the report, the 22-year-old has been given the green light to depart the London Stadium this month given that he is not in Hammers boss David Moyes’ plans.

With that said, below, three of our FLW writers have offered their thoughts on Coventry’s potential move to Rotherham this month.

Rotherham United have conducted some good bits of business already and a deal for Conor Coventry will only strengthen that.

Looking to propel themselves above a relegation dog fight, the loan signing of the 22-year-old will certainly aid their chances of doing exactly that.

A very intelligent footballer who reads the game quicker than most and who has a brilliant range of passing, Coventry would slot in well under Matt Taylor.

Of course, Rotherham fans will be hoping that Coventry is not a Dan Barlaser replacement as Middlesbrough continue to cast their eyes over the midfielder.

If Boro are to strike a deal and sign Barlaser, then the West Ham starlet is someone who can come in, thrive and help the Millers dominate the ball.

I was at Vicarage Road as Watford took on Rotherham on Saturday and was impressed by the Millers on the counter attack.

Bringing in a midfielder like Conor Coventry could be a good addition in that sense, with the young midfielder very able to pick a pass which could benefit them as they look to break on sides.

Potentially, though, Coventry could also bring about more of an element of control in the middle of the park, too, although given their league status, that’s clearly a difficult thing for a club in Rotherham’s position to do.

With speculation over Dan Barlaser’s future, the club would be doing well to get a central midfielder in, too.

Although, hopefully for Rotherham’s sake, Coventry is being signed to play alongside the Millers’ number four, instead of replace him.

This looks a smart move from a Rotherham United perspective.

Dan Barlaser has continued to be linked with a move to Middlesbrough and losing him without having a replacement there could have be fatal to the Millers’ hopes of survival.

Not only that, another option in midfield would be a boost for Matt Taylor given Ben Wiles’ injury.

Conor Coventry may have failed to breakthrough at West Ham but I see him as a good option for a lower Championship level side.

With his Hammers contract done soon, this loan deal could easily turn into a permanent deal in the summer.
