Reading’s home clash with Port Vale was abandoned due to a mass pitch invasion in the opening quarter of an hour.

Home supporters made their way onto the playing surface early in the first half of Saturday’s League One encounter at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

A sizeable crowd of Royals fans chose to take to the pitch in their latest protest against the club’s unpopular owner Dai Yongge.

Reading attempted to plead with supporters to disperse through several messages posted on their official social media channels.

But after the demonstration remained unmoved for over an hour, a decision to abandon the fixture was finally made.

“Following an on-pitch protest at Reading v Port Vale, today’s fixture has been abandoned,” confirmed an EFL statement.

“Every effort was made to restart the game but it became increasingly obvious that this would not be possible.

“We will now discuss the implications of this afternoon’s events with the clubs involved.”

Rubén Sellés’ side are currently mired in League One’s relegation zone, having received a four-point deduction earlier this season for financial breaches.
