Reading manager Kelly Chambers says that her side are focusing on themselves as they continue to fight to retain their Barclays Women’s Super League status for another season.

The Royals are currently in 10th position in the league table, four points ahead of bottom club Leicester City who have two games-in-hand.

Leicester City have improved in recent weeks and they collected their first points of the season last time out. While The Foxes are putting pressure on the sides above them, Reading boss Chambers says that her side are focusing on their own performances and what they can do to survive.

“If I’m honest, we are focusing on ourselves,” Chambers said when speaking in a Reading press conference. “If it was just us and Leicester that are in this relegation battle, we might be looking at it a little bit more but there are so many clubs that are in it or can be drawn into it. With this league, it is so competitive and different results can go either way on any day.

“For us, it is about making sure that we build on our performances, making sure that we are working hard on the training pitch. I truly believe that we will turn the performances into results and we were starting to prove that before the Christmas break.

“We need to make sure that we concentrate on us. If we start worrying about other teams, we will forget about our process and what we need to do to make sure that we remain in this league.”

Reading travel to Prenton Park to take on Liverpool in their next match on Sunday. The two clubs are separated by just a point and Chambers is expecting a tight game.

She said “We know that they try to be really organised defensively and that’s always been a characteristic of Matt (Beard), his teams are always difficult to break down. We know their threats, we’ve seen that they like to play on the outside of teams, play beyond teams. You only have to watch the last time that we played them, they scored three headers from crosses. The threat that Katie Stengel gives them in the forward line is a big threat too.

“It was quite an evenly-contested match the last time we played them and it makes it even more exciting going into this game because we are both probably in positions right now that we don’t want to be in around the bottom of the table. It is definitely going to be an exciting game.”

Reading’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Liverpool is scheduled to kick-off at 2pm on Sunday afternoon.
