Ghana’s early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations is good news for Reading with two defenders set to return.

The African nation were knocked out of the international competition at the group stage phase following a disastrous 3-2 defeat to Comoros yesterday.

The defeat means that Baba Rahman and Andy Yiadom should be in contention to face Huddersfield Town this weekend now that their time on international duty has come to an end.

However, neither will be back in time to face Luton Town at the Select Car Leasing Stadium this evening.

The tournament is set to continue until February 6, which meant the two defenders could’ve missed Reading’s other upcoming fixtures.

But Ghana’s loss is Reading’s gain, with manager Veljko Paunovic receiving a much needed boost to his side.

Reading’s recent results without the pair have been dreadful. Paunovic’s side are winless in five league games, and were even eliminated from the FA Cup after a humiliating 2-1 defeat to Kidderminster in the Third Round.

Has Nicky Shorey played in the Premier League?

Yes No

The low point was reached during a 7-0 thrashing from Fulham on January 11.

Reading will be welcoming back both players, who have been sorely missed in the side. Reading fell to 21st in the table in their absence, with only three points separating the Royals from the relegation zone.

Peterborough below have a game in hand that, if they won, would bring them level on points with Reading.

Reading’s next opponents, Luton, are 15th in the Championship table.

The Verdict

It was a total disaster of an AFCON campaign for Ghana, who only managed to earn one point from their group.

As one of the continent’s biggest sides, a lot more was expected of them and it has come as a big shock that they have been eliminated so early.

Reading will be delighted with the outcome as they desperately need as many players available as they can, as they search for some kind of form that might save their season.
