Reading have confirmed that Paul Ince has accepted the position of being the club’s permanent manager following a spell as caretaker manager.

The former England international replaced previous Royals boss Veljko Paunovic on a temporary basis back in February – his first managerial role in eight years following his departure from Blackpool in 2014.

Ince won four of his 14 matches in charge of Reading, keeping them in the Championship in the process despite the threat of relegation, and has now been handed the opportunity to take the club forward.

It has also been revealed by the club that Ince’s assistant, Alex Rae, will stay on as well for the upcoming 2022-23 season, with the length of both of their contracts remaining undisclosed.

The hierarchy at the Select Car Leasing Stadium have opted to hand the job to Ince despite Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth revealing that he would love to manage the club in the future.

The Verdict

It is a bold move to give Ince the job by Reading considering he hasn’t been a permanent boss anywhere for eight years.

He may have gotten some good results out of the club, but it will be a different challenge altogether next season.

When you take into consideration that key players like John Swift are set to depart and the hierarchy will listen to offers for talisman Lucas Joao, it shows how big of a job Ince has to restore former glories to the Royals.

It doesn’t appear that Reading have considered any outside candidates and are happy for Ince to get on with the task at hand – it will be interesting to see if he can build any momentum at the start of the new campaign.
