Bayer Leverkusen started their season off with a win against VfB Stuttgart in the DFL Super Cup, coming from behind to beat them on penalties.

Die Werkself looked as if they continued where they left off when Victor Boniface tapped in an Edmond Tapsoba header. However, minutes later Enzo Millot, fresh off an Olympic silver medal, equalised for VfB.

In the first half, Stuttgart had the better chances to then take the lead with Millot and Ermedin Demirovic both hitting the woodwork. Leverkusen would then make it difficult for themselves when Martin Terrier was sent off for a challenge on Demirovic.

The second half continued to match the pace of the first half and Stuttgart took the lead when Deniz Undav scored with his first touch. Leverkusen then showed the mental resilience that they had done the whole of last season and Patrik Schick equalised in the 88th minute.

Lukas Hradecky was the hero of the shootout as he saved Frans Krätzig’s penalty while Silas missed his to win the Super Cup for Leverkusen.

Bayer Leverkusen receives a reality check

Leverkusen were second-best throughout the game despite once again being able to rescue the game right at the end and ultimately winning on penalties.

If they are to retain their Bundesliga crown they will need to play at an even higher level compared to last season, especially if a much changed Stuttgart side can outplay them, who knows what Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund could do?

What also seems to be a problem is Alonso’s decision to rotate. In the first game of the season, and a week until the Bundesliga opener, Leverkusen can afford to play their best team, but tonight they didn’t and it showed however, once again they were saved by a late goal against one of the substitutes.

Stuttgart will continue to be a problem

Despite losing several key players in the summer, Stuttgart continue to look great. The new signings have seemingly slotted in well while the established players from last season continue to play great. Credit goes to Sebastian Hoeneß who despite all this change has been able to keep VfB playing this exciting attacking football.

Some could go as far as saying Stuttgart may be a dark horse to lift the Meisterscharle for the first time since 2007.

Of particular interest will be the strike partnership of Deniz Undav and Ermedin Demirovic. If what was shown tonight was a taste of what is to come, Stuttgart will not miss Serhou Guirassy.

A great advertisement for German football

This game was end-to-end throughout, attacking fast-paced football and just overall a fun experience to watch. There is hope that this season will be even better than last season if Bayern, Dortmund and Leipzig can also produce as exciting displays.

Next week the Bundesliga returns with Leverkusen kicking off the season away at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
