RB Leipzig’s latest Bundesliga loss leaves the German Red Bulls leapfrogged by their opponents who beat them on the day. Borussia Mönchengladbach’s three points means Gerardo Seoane’s Foals now occupy fifth place. Marco Rose’s Saxons (in sixth place on 42 points) may potentially be knocked out of the second Europa League qualifying place tomorrow.
For Leipzig, it appears as if options to salvage the season are running thin. Rose famously took the team on a special “training retreat” last month ahead of two matches against other top four contenders. This tactic appeared to work. In two successive Saturday Bundesliga Topspiels, Leipzig took a point off Freiburg and stole all three points off Dortmund.
It’s nevertheless back to business as usual after the latest defeat. In a post match interview reminiscent of one given by RB captain Willi Orban four rounds back, attacker Christoph Baumgartner freely admitted that he didn’t recall much offensively from his team throughout the entire game. Club sporting director Marcel Schäfer concurred.
“We lacked everything,” Baumgartner told Sky Germany. “I can’t remember a single clear-cut chance for us. It’s not good enough. Everyone knows we can play better. I keep saying the same thing week after week, and I’m sorry about that. Unfortunately, I don’t have the recipe [for the turnaround].” “We are massively disappointed because we are not performing and getting the results we need,” Schäfer added in his check in with Sky. “That’s clearly not enough. We’re far too sloppy with our opportunities and creating too few chances to score. We were far too passive, always just reacting instead of acting.“
