As reported by Sky Germany, RB Leipzig are set to announce the signing of Napoli midfielder Eljif Elmas.
The 24-year-old North Macedonian is considered to be the replacement for the departing Emil Forsberg after his ten-year association with Leipzig came to an end with a 1-1 draw away to Werder Bremen on matchday 16. It is understood that Die Roten Bullen have agreed to a €23 million fee with the Italian champions for Elmas.
This was a signing that Leipzig had attempted to get over the line during the summer under former sporting director Max Eberl. However, due to financial reasons, the Saxon-based club settled for the cheaper loans of Xavi Simons and Fabio Carvalho, as well as the permanent signing of Christoph Baumgartner.
During his four-and-a-half-year stint in Naples, Elmas tallied up 189 appearances for the club, scoring 19 goals while collecting eleven assists. A prominent feature in central midfield, the North Macedonian can play in the number ten position as well as on the left and right sides of the midfield.
The 24-year-old is expected to travel to Leipzig’s training camp in La Manga to meet his new teammates on January 2nd. However, this is provided that the medical and paperwork go according to plan.
