The deal is worth an initial €38 million plus add-ons. The Belgian forward will sign a five-year contract pending the completion of his medical examination later this week.
It is unclear how much the bonuses for the prolific Openda are worth, but it is worth noting that Leipzig’s last bid stood at €43m. The add-ons will likely take the fee over that figure.
The 21-year-old forward was a standout performer for Lens last season, bagging 21 goals and four assists in Ligue 1.
His stellar performances played a crucial role in helping Lens finish a mere point behind the league champions, Paris Saint-Germain.
The negotiations between the two clubs have been drawn out, with Lens Chief Executive Officer Arnaud Pouille playing hardball over his star striker.
Pouille confirmed receiving three offers from Leipzig but rejected all three. He asked for €50m.
However, Leipzig have ultimately secured their preferred candidate to replace Christopher Nkunku. The Frenchman left the German club to join Chelsea.
Personal terms were agreed between Leipzig and Openda in early June. The Liege-born attacker even visited the Red Bull Arena and the club’s state-of-the-art training facilities.
Openda was reportedly blown away and made up his mind to join the DFB Pokal champions. The young striker is on the brink of an exciting new chapter in his career.
The move to the Bundesliga will allow him to showcase his talents on a larger stage. He now has the chance to continue his impressive development.
Lens will use the funds from Openda’s sale to replace the talismanic centre-forward and beef up their squad ahead of next season, where they will be playing Champions League football.
