Former Juventus forward Fabrizio Ravanelli advised Manchester City to sign Bologna target Riccardo Calafiori this summer, suggesting he could be ‘the new Stones’ under Pep Guardiola.

The 21-year-old Italian defender has been a crucial part of the Rossoblu’s Cinderella story this season, being reliable at the back and productive going forward as the team fight for their first ever chance in the Champions League.

Calafiori has proven himself one of the most exciting defenders in Italy this season and has started to become a hop topic ahead of the summer transfer window, attracting the attention of clubs like Juventus and Tottenham.

Calafiori ‘the new stones’

Speaking on page nine of today’s Tuttosport, Ravanelli spoke highly of Calafiori and explained why he’d be the perfect choice for Manchester City.

“I like him a lot and it would be a great deal. Calafiori, if he played for Manchester City, would be the new Stones. He is a perfect player for Guardiola, because he knows how to play many roles in the defensive phase.

“Calafiori is good at kickstarting the move, as well as marking and having quality in passing. Furthermore, it seems to me that he also has a strong personality. In short, he would represent an excellent signing.”

He spoke about Juventus’ need to strengthen their squad in the summer.

“For me the important thing is that the management strengthens the squad, signing players for Juve. If you change coach, but don’t buy four or five important players, it becomes difficult to believe that you can fight for the more important goals.

“This applies regardless, whether Allegri is still there or Motta arrives.”

Finally, Ravanelli highlighted some players Juventus should look to build the squad around.

“In addition to Bremer and Chiesa, Danilo, Vlahovic and Rabiot. I’m convinced that Fagioli’s return will prove to be an added value.

“Furthermore, I would strongly focus on two very talented young people like Soule and Yildiz. This must be the basis to be strengthened with other quality additions to make Juventus competitive again.”
