Marcus Rashford is set to be sidelined for three months with the Manchester United forward set to undergo an operation to correct a long-standing shoulder issue next week.

Rashford sustained a muscle tear in his shoulder last November that hindered the second half of his season, with the 23-year-old taking pain-killing injections in a bid to manage the problem last term.

The forward was included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2020 despite the issues, though featured for just 58 minutes across a series of substitute appearances during the tournament.

Having returned from a post-European Championship holiday, Rashford held talks with the club’s medical staff and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this week over the best course of action.

According to the Telegraph, Rashford is understood to have expressed his ‘eagerness’ to have surgery in a bid to correct the issue and is now expected to miss 12 weeks of action.

The news is a major blow to the Red Devils ahead of their season opener against Leeds on August 14, with Rashford also expected to miss crucial league fixtures with Leicester and Liverpool, in addition to the club’s first three Champions League group games.

Rashford has managed several injuries in recent seasons including a stress fracture to his back and is keen to return at full fitness following next week’s operation.
