Marcus Rashford is ‘in favour’ of undergoing a shoulder operation that will see the Manchester United forward miss the first two months of the Premier League season.

Rashford has been struggling with a shoulder issue since November and the club are currently deliberating whether the 23-year-old should undergo surgery, having seen the problem impact his performances over the second half of last season.

Rashford was included in the England squad for Euro 2020 despite the injury and United had hoped the three-week post-tournament break would help correct the problem, though the Mail are reporting that the star is ‘strongly in favour’ of surgery to fix the muscle tear.

The forward has a scan two weeks ago where it was judged that the tear should not get worse, and a decision is set to be made following talks today on whether to press ahead with an operation that will rule the forward out until October.

Rashford is not scheduled to return back for pre-season training until Sunday, though will meet with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer today to decide a course of action, having required pain-killing injections for much of last season.

Rashford’s absence would be a major blow to the Red Devils who begin their Premier League season against Leeds on August 14, though the £72.9m arrival of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund has added to the club’s attacking options while Jesse Lingard has returned from his highly successful loan spell at West Ham.

Meanwhile, United are close to announcing a deal for Real Madrid central defender, Raphael Varane, the two clubs finalising a deal worth around £40 million for the four time Champions League winner.

The Red Devils are expected to turn their attentions to bolstering their midfield, with the future of Paul Pogba also needing to be resolved one way or another.
