The Women’s Super League has become one of the most competitive domestic leagues in women’s football.

The first round of results from the WSL season is evidence of this as newly promoted Liverpool stunned champions Chelsea, while Aston Villa put four past reigning League Cup holders Man City.

It’s a competition that has attracted many of the top players in the world, with the likes of Sam Kerr, Vivianne Miedema and Magdalena Eriksson taking the league by storm.

Yet, there’s still plenty of room for more stars to come to England and a plethora of big names who fans would no doubt love to see.

From Champions League heroes to World Cup winners, we’ve picked out five players that we’re desperate to see play in the WSL at some point.

Whether or not it will happen is a different story but there’s no harm in dreaming:

Alexia Putellas

This one is fairly obvious. Putellas is the current holder of the Women’s Ballon d’Or and has been the standout player in women’s football for the past couple of years.

The midfielder has already written herself into Barcelona folklore and shouts of her name permeated the Camp Nou during Barca’s memorable win against Real Madrid last year.

Unfortunately, Putellas was injured in the build-up to Euro 2022 –– robbing English fans of the chance to see her in person.

Having won all there is to win in Spain, perhaps Putellas would consider coming to England, where Spanish teammates Vicky Losada, Ona Batlle and Leila Ouhabi already play.

Megan Rapinoe

Over the years, a number of renowned US stars have come to the WSL, including Carli Lloyd, Tobin Heath, Alex Morgan and Christen Press, to name just a few.

However, Rapinoe has yet to copy her compatriots in trying life in England, though she did spend some time at Lyon between 2013 and 2014.

The 37-year-old could well retire from the game soon and we’d love nothing more than to see her bow out in England.

Lena Oberdorf

While it was England who emerged victorious at Euro 2022, Germany’s Oberdorf was one of the stars of the competition and is fast developing into one of the best players in the world.

The tough-tackling, no-nonsense midfielder is perfectly suited to the physical demands of the WSL and would be an ideal fit for several top sides.

Oberdorf is currently an integral part of Wolfsburg’s squad but the likes of Chelsea or Arsenal may be able to lure the 20-year-old to the WSL.

Ada Hegerberg

The WSL is already blessed with outstanding strikers, not least Kerr and Miedema.

Yet, Lyon’s Hegerberg would unquestionably give both a run for their money in the Golden Boot race.

The Norwegian has spent the past eight years at French champions Lyon, so perhaps it could be time for a new challenge.

Saki Kumagai

Kumagai is another to have enjoyed years of success at Lyon and the Japanese star is also a World Cup winner.

The 31-year-old has spent time in both Germany and France but has never played in the WSL.

As one of the most popular Asian footballers in the world, Kumagai could help bring a new audience to the league if she were to join.
