Raphael Varane will not wear No. 4 at Manchester United

According to Stretty News, Manchester United new man, Raphael Varane will not be wearing the No. 4 jersey. That number is currently occupied by Phil Jones who is likely to be included in the squad this season. Varane could end up taking the No. 12 or 16, which are still vacant.

Manchester United needed a defender this summer and they got their hands on an elite one. The Red Devils have long been after the Frenchman, ever since his teenage years at Lends. However, he would go on to join Real Madrid and become one of the most decorated defenders in the game. He has won every trophy there and finally decided to take on a new challenge this season.

United knew that this was their best chance of nabbing him. His contract was set to run out within a year and an approach could be made. A £41 million deal was agreed with the rest of the formalities still left to be done.

He is now said to have undergone his medical, following which he will sign the contract and be officially unveiled as a new Manchester United player.

There has been speculation over what jersey number Varane would take. The No. 4 was expected but apparently, he will not be taking that from Jones. The shirt number that the Frenchman will don is said to be an ‘unexpected one’. Possible options include the 12 or 16, formerly worn by Chris Smalling and Michael Carrick.

For now, it is unclear as to which number he will really sport. Only at the official unveiling will that become clear. Another question is whether he will feature in the season opener against Leeds United on Saturday. However, with the player yet to be unveiled, the game is unlikely to be his debut for the club.
