Raphael Varane has spoken ahead of the Manchester derby on Sunday.

Speaking to French media whilst on international duty, the Manchester United centre-back spoke about the passion he has witnessed from fans during derby matches.

Varane highlight the responsibility he and other players have on such big occasions.

“The rivalry is mainly from the supporters, it’s important for them and we respect that,” Varane told L’Equipe. “We want to make them happy, so we want to fight and win against teams like City and Liverpool.

“You have to feel what the fans want from you and what they want. It’s very important.”

Varane speaks as a player who experienced how bad things got at United last season. On top of that, he has quickly become one of Erik ten Hag’s main players and I hate to think how much he will be missed if he picks up an injury at any stage of the season.

I’m obviously not trying to jinx Varane, but injuries are always a possibility when you look at his track record over the years. It is a relief that he has returned from international break without any knocks or niggles.

The 29-year-old struggled to live up to the expectations of his reputation last season, but things are looking better now.
