Manchester United’s injury situation at the back is getting out of control ahead of their crucial FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City on Sunday.

Young Willy Kambwala, drafted into the starting line-up for the last two Premier League games, has also suffered an injury, leaving manager Erik ten Hag with only one fit centre-back at his disposal.

Before the young Frenchman’s issue, both Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans got sidelined against Chelsea despite the medical team passing them fit.

Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof were already injured at that time and currently, the manager might be forced to partner Casemiro alongside Harry Maguire for the game at Wembley.

Varane’s future

The number of injuries suffered by the Red Devils is abnormally high this campaign and considering the number of goals conceded by the backline this season, it is clear that changes are needed.

The 20-time English league champions have conceded three or more goals 13 times this term, while conceding the second-most goals in the Champions League group stages this season enroute to an embarrassing fourth-place finish.

The French World Cup winner has been one of the most injury-prone stars since his €40 million move back in 2021. The 30-year-old has missed nine games this campaign and is in danger of missing all the remaining contests this term.

The former Real Madrid superstar has already missed over 40 games since his move to Old Trafford and it is clear to see that the Spanish giants sold him at the right time.

When fit and with Lisandro Martinez beside him, the former France international was a revelation as seen last season. But without the Argentine and asked to play on the left side, Varane has struggled to impose himself.

Being the highest earner at the club is also something that has not impressed INEOS with United opting against triggering a one-year extension, much to the dismay of the centre-back.

With his contract set to expire in June, United have decided not to keep hold of him and as relayed by F365, “there is no intention, on either side, to extend their relationship”.

Varane wants Real Madrid return

Varane is currently trying to find a new home for himself. Saudi Arabian clubs are willing to break the bank to land him while the former Lens star wants a return to the Bernabeu and has “offered” his services to Florentino Perez.

The player “wants to return to where he was happy” and with Los Blancos needing defensive reinforcements, arriving “at zero cost and with a salary that would fit perfectly into Real Madrid’s salary scale” makes a lot of sense.

But usually Real Madrid do not bring back players who have left and Leny Yorro is at the top of their wishlist. That is why Varane’s agent has “already contacted different teams” in order to try and find a solution.

It will be interesting to see where Varane ends up and who INEOS bring in as replacement in the summer.
