Following last night’s news of an agreement between Manchester United and Real Madrid over the the transfer of Raphaël Varane broken by RMC, today’s L’Équipe breaks down the detail of what is set to be a €50m deal for the World Cup-winning centre-back.

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez had originally set the defender’s price at €70m, turning down a €40m offer last month, with further €40m + €5m and €45m offers coming afterwards. Varane’s transfer is now set to be made official following his medical, which is expected to take place tomorrow – although this is subject to Covid-related quarantine restrictions currently in place.

In addition, RC Lens are set to receive a fee as a result of the transfer, having been the Frenchman’s formative team. The La Liga side offload the Lille native a decade after signing him from RC Lens for €10m, and a year before his current contract was due to expire.

Varane’s representatives had been given permission by Pérez to begin talks with Manchester United a few weeks ago, with talks only being finalised at the end of last week. New Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti had had a final meeting with the centre-back, but was unable to convince him to stay at the club he had managed the Frenchman at from 2013-2015.

The former Lens man will now earn the same wage as fellow centre-back Harry Maguire, at around €250k a week, doubling his Real Madrid salary.
