Raphaël Varane has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 29.

A World Cup winner in 2018, the defender made his senior international debut in 2013 and went on to win 93 caps for Les Bleus, scoring five goals and appearing in four major tournaments.

Varane was a crucial part of the France side that became world champions five years ago and featured heavily again as they reached the 2022 final just two months ago.

A report in Le Parisien suggested that Varane’s decision was based on wanting to spend more time with his family, as well as the physical and mental demands of an international career.

The Manchester United centre-back has suffered from various injuries since he joined the club from Real Madrid in 2021.
