Bayern Munich presented Raphaël Guerreiro and Konrad Laimer to the media at their Tegernsee training camp on Monday, with both players signed on a free transfer.
Speaking on his decision to join Bayern from Borussia Dortmund, Guerreiro said: “I spoke to Thomas Tuchel on the phone. He showed me that he really wants me in the team. It’s a great opportunity for me to be at such a big club. João Cancelo also encouraged me to take this step, he said nothing but good things about the club and the city.”
Guerreiro reportedly turned down a two-year contract to remain at Borussia Dortmund, where he had spent the last seven years. During his time at the Westfalenstadion, the Portugal international played 224 games across all competitions, scoring 40 and creating 50.
With an ability to provide cover in midfield, Guerreiro is an excellent coup for Bayern Munich as they look to rebuild their squad after what proved to be an underwhelming campaign, despite retaining their Bundesliga title.
Not only have Bayern signed Guerreiro, Laimer joined the Rekordmeister signed a four-year deal with the club after his contract at RB Leipzig expired. Reports already suggest that Tuchel will play the Austrian alongside Joshua Kimmich in midfield, which leaves Leon Goretzka’s future in doubt.
Like Guerreiro, Laimer can play in several positions. “I can play in many positions – as an attacking or defensive midfielder, for example,” said the 26-year-old at his presentation. “I feel at home anywhere in midfield. I only know how to go at full throttle. I’m just happy we’ve started.”
