Ranking the favourites to sign Ben Chilwell from Chelsea

Ben Chilwell looks likely to be the latest casualty of change at Chelsea. The left-back was informed in the summer that he does not feature in the plans of new head coach Enzo Maresca, though failed to secure a move away.

While the likes of Raheem Sterling and Trevoh Chalobah left on loan to find minutes, Chilwell finds himself out of the picture at Chelsea.

The 27-year-old has featured for just 45 minutes in the League Cup this season and will be desperate to secure more game time when the January transfer window opens.

There will no doubt be plenty of clubs interested in the England international, with left-back a problem position for several sides. Using odds from new bookmakers in the UK, we’ve ranked the five favourites to sign Ben Chilwell from Chelsea in January.

Ranking the favourites to sign Ben Chilwell from Chelsea

West Ham – 10/1

West Ham’s unconvincing start to the season could see the Hammers enter the transfer market in January, despite backing Julen Lopetegui to the tune of around £121m. Lopetegui reinforced his side’s backline with the arrivals of Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, though could look to complete the backline with a new left-back.

The move to West Ham would allow Chilwell to remain in the capital, where he would compete with another ex-Chelsea left-back, Emerson Palmieri, for a place in the side.

Newcastle – 10/1

Newcastle had a relatively quiet summer transfer window, though a failed move for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi suggested there are funds to spend in the North East. Left-back has been a problem position for the Magpies with Lewis Hall lacking experience and Lloyd Kelly and Dan Burn more comfortable at the centre-back.

Chilwell could be recruited to add a senior player at left-back, though Newcastle will be keen to avoid stalling Hall’s progress after an encouraging start to the campaign.

Leicester City – 8/1

Could Chilwell return to Leicester?

A product of the club’s academy system, Chilwell made 123 senior appearances for the Foxes before his £50m move to Chelsea in 2021. He won the Champions League in his debut season at Chelsea, but has endured a largely injury-plagued spell in West London and the return home in search of regular football could appeal.

Victor Kristiansen has nailed down the left-back role in Steve Cooper’s side during the season’s opening weeks, having returned from a successful loan spell at Bologna last season. The Danish defender helped the Italian side to Champions League qualification before returning to the King Power Stadium.

Brentford – 8/1

Brentford are second-favourites to sign Chilwell with Thomas Frank having had to adapt without a recognised left-back this season. Rico Henry’s long-term absence and Sergio Reguilon’s return to Tottenham after a loan spell last season has left Brentford short of defensive depth.

Kristoffer Ajer has deputised in the unfamiliar role and Frank could use January as the chance to add much-needed expertise, even though Henry is closing in on a first-team return.

Manchester United – 11/4

Manchester United are another side who have found left-back to be an ongoing issue.

Luke Shaw’s continued struggles with injury and Tyrell Malacia’s long absence have left the Red Devils without a specialist option. Diogo Dalot has occupied the role for much of the current campaign, with Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui alternative options.

Chilwell would represent a recognised left-back, though the England defender’s injury-record will concern given the problems of their current options.
