Cristiano Ronaldo enhanced his argument as football’s greatest-ever goalscorer after scoring the 900th goal of his career this week.

The Portuguese icon is the first-ever player to achieve that feat, adding another chapter to a career that has seen records routinely shattered.

Given that oversupply of efforts, it was a tough task trying to whittle down the best goals Ronaldo has scored – but someone had to do it.

Here are five of Cristiano Ronaldo’s best goals.

Ranking Cristiano Ronaldo’s best-ever goals

5. Portugal vs Spain (2018)

Spain and Portugal played out a World Cup classic at the 2018 edition in Russia, with their group-stage goal-fest centred around one man.

Ronaldo scored a stunning hat-trick in the all-Iberian encounter, completing his treble with a spectacular set-piece. With two minutes to go and Portugal trailing, Ronaldo fired an effort into the top corner to snatch his side a point. The very best of his FIFA World Cup goals.

4. Real Madrid vs Espanyol (2016)

A goal that brought together the fun-filled flair of Ronaldo’s teenage years with the ruthless penalty-box killer he had become.

As the ball breaks down the right channel Ronaldo has Espanyol defenders in close company. A signature ‘Ronaldo-chop’ takes him past one opponent, before another sublime piece of skill navigates him through two more blue and white shirts.

The lethal left-footed strike caps a wonderful individual effort.

3. Manchester United vs Portsmouth (2008)

Some might have sneered at Ronaldo’s record from free-kicks in major tournaments but few players boast a better catalogue of set-piece specials.

This fabulous free-kick against Portsmouth might just be the best the Premier League has seen.

Unsavable.

2. Porto vs Manchester United (2009)

The Puskas Award was invented to recognise the “most beautiful” goal of the calendar year in 2009.

Typically Ronaldo, a man whose list of ‘firsts’ is incomparable, was the first recipient after this blockbuster strike for Manchester United at Porto. Ronaldo was around 40 yards from goal when he received the ball in space, before launching a heat-seeking missile destined for the top corner.

The Estádio do Dragão was stunned as Ronaldo’s rocket earned Manchester United a 1-0 win and progress to the semi-finals.

1. Juventus vs Real Madrid (2018)

Cristiano Ronaldo’s greatest goal came in a Champions League tie at Juventus, as Real Madrid sent a statement with a 3-0 win in Turin.

Ronaldo had opened the scoring early on before producing one of the great Champions League goals. Dani Carvajal’s lifted cross into the area was met by Ronaldo, whose overhead kick flashed past Gianluigi Buffon.

The home crowd sounded out in applause for a moment of genius from the opposition, the sort of goal that will be replayed countless times in years to come. The athleticism and execution were perfect in a moment of audacious acrobats from a master at work.
