🧤 Ranking all the Premier League goalkeepers from 2️⃣0️⃣ to 1️⃣

It must be difficult being a goalkeeper.

The only position on the football pitch where if you make a mistake, its 99% guaranteed to end in conceding a goal.

You have to have thick skin, a commanding presence and nowadays, the ability to launch diagonal passes like Andrea Pirlo in his peak.

Here is our rank of all the 20 first-choice Premier League goalkeepers.

20 – Tim Krul (Norwich City)

This may seem a little harsh as he is capable of the odd worldie of a save, and Louis van Gaal literally brought him on at a World Cup to save penalties.

But Norwich are bottom of the league and have the joint-worst defensive record in the league.

19 – Aaron Ramsdale (Bournemouth)

Ramsdale is only 21, and has shown enough to prove he has potential. But right now it’s not enough, and it might not be enough to keep the Cherries in the top flight.

18 – Kepa Arrizabalaga (Chelsea)

It’s not looking good for Kepa’s future at Chelsea, having recently been dropped for 38-year old Willy Caballero.

The worst save percentage in the league. Not a pleasant stat for the most expensive goalkeeper in the world.

17 – Alex McCarthy (Southampton)

Former Reading goalkeeper McCarthy was second-choice at the start of the season behind a keeper who literally conceded nine goals in one match.

16 – Jordan Pickford (Everton)

Pickford has conceded around 50 goals in his previous three seasons, and has conceded the most in the top half of the Premier League this season.

Is he the scene of the crime too much?

The criticism won’t bother him though.

15 – Mathew Ryan (Brighton and Hove Albion)

The Australian number one is certainly capable of pulling off a miraculous save but finds himself in the position his club will probably finish in the league come May.

14 – Tom Heaton (Aston Villa)

Commendable shot-stopper in his time at Burnley, but has kept just three clean sheets at Villa before suffering that unfortunate season-ending injury at Burnley in January.

13 – Lukas Fabianksi (West Ham United)

The Polish goalkeeper has improved since his time at Arsenal, where he picked up the ever so creative name in the English press of ‘Flappyhandski’.

Maybe West Ham wouldn’t be where they are had he been fit all season.

12 – Hugo Lloris (Tottenham Hotspur)

Lloris is a World Cup winning captain.

Yet here he is about to finish behind Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka in a ranking of the best goalkeepers in the league.

Life has a way of keeping us grounded.

11 – Nick Pope (Burnley)

The former Bury and Charlton Athletic goalkeeper has built the reputation of being an established Premier League quality goalkeeper.

Probably gets a call-up to England’s squad for Euro 2020.

10 – Rui Patrício (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Entirely deserves his place in the top ten purely for how cool he looks while doing his job. Effortless.

9 – Martin Dúbravka (Newcastle United)

If you look at all the underlying stats, such as your xG, there is no explanation for how Newcastle aren’t bottom of the league.

The reason why they are enjoying the comfort of mid-table is probably down to Dúbravka.

Worshipped more than Shearer on Tyneside.

8 – David de Gea (Manchester United)

To be fair, there’s a fair argument to say he should be lower on this list.

This is not the de Gea of old, best goalkeeper in the league, and probably the world.

Now, you can argue he comes in behind a keeper who plays for a team that lets an eagle run wild before the start of every home match.

7 – Ben Foster (Watford)

Has cemented his place in the top ten goalkeepers in the league for his time-wasting abilities alone.

Stick Foster kicking the goalpost while killing time taking a goal-kick up in The Louvre.

6 – Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester City)

A Premier League winner, still as strong and still holds as much as a presence his penalty area as he did in 2015/16.

Only two teams have a better defensive record than Leicester City this season, league leaders Liverpool and Sheffield United.

5 – Vicente Guaita (Crystal Palace)

Crystal Palace might still find themselves dragged into the relegation mire, despite having 30 points in February.

They are the lowest scorers in the division (23) yet have been comfortable all season.

A lot of that has to be down to the ability of the Spaniard they brought in from Getafe on a free back in 2018.

4 – Bernd Leno (Arsenal)

Leno had the look of a goalkeeper who wasn’t cut out for the league when he arrived from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of €25m in July 2018.

However, this season, we are witnessing a player who has the ability to produce some absolutely stupendous saves in his locker.

Still capable of throwing one in from time to time, but Leno now holds more of a physical presence than in his early days in England.

3 – Dean Henderson (Sheffield United)

There will be some questions asked over the summer.

One, on why England have probably persisted with Jordan Pickford ahead of Henderson which has led to their quarter-final demise at the Euros.

And two, do Manchester United continue to stick with De Gea when they have a future England goalkeeper in their ranks.

Joint-highest clean sheets kept by a Premier League keeper this season, in a team which continues to amaze.

2 – Ederson (Manchester City)

It has been forgotten due to their poor defensive showing this campaign that Manchester City had the second best defensive record in the league last season.

They have the keeper who has changed what it means to be a goalkeeper.

Ederson’s ability to read danger coming from his incredible starting position is brilliant, but his actual passing range is beyond belief when you consider the Brazilian is actually, well yeah, a goalkeeper.

1 – Alisson Becker (Liverpool)

Joint-top for most clean sheets this season, despite missing eight games due to injury.

Champions League winner, as well as the Golden Glove winner in the competition last season, Brazil’s number one.

Probably going to be the goalkeeper of the league champions.

And now ranked the no.1 out of all the no.1’s in Onefootball’s ranking of every keeper in the league. The real MVP.
